Transportable Plastic Greenhouses and Static Greenhouse Kits

You may not want a greenhouse in your garden all the year round or you may need to be able to move it from one part of the garden to the other. There are several reasons why you may not want a fixed and permanent greenhouse, and you don’t have to have one.

You can get transportable greenhouse kits from a good number of garden centres and do it yourself stores, and these are quite easy to construct.

When you buy a portable greenhouse kit you can expect it to be less expensive than a standard kit and very often you will spend less time putting the kit together.

Before you go out and buy a kit to build a greenhouse, you should be quite clear on what you want to put in the finished greenhouse, whether you just need it for something like extending your tomato crop etc. What you want to do with the greenhouse will have implications for the size kit that you want. Once you have decided on how much space you need you can start looking for your portable greenhouse kit.

Unlike standard greenhouses a portable greenhouse does not usually have either glass or polycarbonate sides, a portable kit will likely contain tear resistant plastic. This plastic covering is specially designed to exclude harmful UV rays and let in about three quarters of the available light, which makes it better suited to nurturing seedlings. The plastic sheets have zips so that they can be opened to let air into the greenhouse and they are supposed to last for up to five years.

If you want to do something more with a greenhouse than nurture seedlings or deal with small patches of fruit or plants then you will probably do better to get a static greenhouse rather than a portable one. Portable greenhouses are often used as cover for a certain patch of vegetables or fruit rather than a variety of plants.

A standard greenhouse kit may be more expensive than a portable one but if you want the greenhouse to deal with a selection of plants, some for most of the year, then you really need to spend the extra money on a standard kit. The greenhouse kit will probably have polycarbonate sides; very often the polycarbonate is already fitted into the frame, which makes it a lot easier to put the greenhouse together. A lot of people choose wooden frames because they tend to be cheaper than the aluminum ones, however, an aluminum frame will generally last longer than a wooden one.

Do it yourself greenhouse kits have grown in popularity as people want to grow more of their own food and increase their self sufficiency.

These kits are a much cheaper option than having a greenhouse built for you. Providing you do your homework and follow the instructions fully when putting your greenhouse together, it should give as much service as a ready built one.
