The Different Types & Styles of Greenhouses by Whitney Segura

Learn The Various Types of Greenhouse Kits & Styles of Greenhouses

Do you have a penchant for plants?  Has anyone ever told you that you have a green thumb?  Do you love puttering around the garden and watching things grow?  Maybe you have always dreamed of having your very own greenhouse.

A greenhouse is simply an exclusive place to grow your own plants.  A greenhouse can be made of plastic or glass.  Because it is made in this manner, it allows the sun to radiate upon it and keep the plants warm.  Plants thrive in this type of environment making it an ideal structure for nature.

A greenhouse can be free standing or attached to your home.  The freestanding greenhouses tend to receive more sunlight than do the attached type of greenhouse.  The attached type of greenhouse, however, also has its advantages.  An attached greenhouse makes it more accessible from the inside of your house.  It is also less costly in terms of heating and electric as your house provides some of this.  Greenhouses should be built facing south to take advantage of the sun.

The Various Types Of Greenhouses Are Listed Below:

Classic A-Frame Greenhouses

Classic A-Frame Greenhouses - Strong and sturdy, these solid greenhouses have slanted sides to them.  They have a high ceiling and costly to heat because of this.  Because of their slanted sides, the growing space is decreased.

Modified A-Frame Greenhouses - The roofs on the Modified version of the A-frame are not as high.  The walls of this greenhouse are straight and therefore gain more space.  The Modified version is more economical in terms of heating costs.

Lean To GreenhousesLean To Greenhouses -  Another economical choice in greenhouses, the Lean-To Greenhouse is an attached greenhouse usually to your house, although it is also able to attach to other structures, such as your garage.  Electricity and plumbing can be obtained through the wall of the house if you choose the right location.

Barn Style Greenhouses

Barn-Style Greenhouses -  Another greenhouse with straight walls, the Barn-Style greenhouse model does not have eaves.  This greenhouse has a Gambrel roof making it look like its namesake. Many barn style greenhouses are made with Specialty Lumber and similar special woods, because they provide many beneficial structural breakthroughs.

Quonset Hut Hoop Greenhouses

Quonset Hut Greenhouses -  Easily warmed, the Quonset Hut is relatively inexpensive.  It has round walls and therefore it has decreased spacing.  This type of greenhouse is often referred to as a “hoop”.

Gothic Arch Greenhouses

Gothic Arch Greenhouses -  Similar to the above, this style of greenhouse differs in the fact that the walls are a bit straighter.  The roof is also pointed.  An attractive appearing greenhouse kit, this style is popular.

The picture to the right depicts the Gothic Arches styling of greenhouses, but most often greenhouses can also be noted by their temperatures as discussed below.

Hot House Greenhouses -  The temperature is stable at 70 degrees or above.  Grow lamps are often used to maintain this degree of warmth.  This environment is ideal for growing tropical plants.

Warm Greenhouses -  The temperature is stable at approximately 50 degrees.  Lamps may be needed depending on the location when the weather is cooler outside.  This environment is ideal for your plants that you might grow outside depending on where you live.

Cool Greenhouses -  The temperature is stable at approximately 40 degrees.  This type of greenhouse requires some insulation.  This environment is ideal for growing seedlings or for storage of other plants that do not require a higher temperature.

miniature greenhouse

Miniature & Indoor Greenhouses - Made for persons with limited to no extra space for a garden structure. An extremely portable and small greenhouse style, very good for those who cannot afford an expensive greenhouse.
