9 Steps To Build A DIY Greenhouse by Whitney Segura

9 Easy Steps For Building A DIY Greenhouse Kit

Using Salvaged Material For Your Greenhouse Construction

Step 1.  For those wanting to build a larger DIY greenhouse looking into salvaged materials is a great option. Salvaged materials are inexpensive and environmentally friendly, it’s a win-win situation.

Greenhouse Temperatures & Shading

Step 2:  You must take the local area temperature and humidity into your building plans, because colder regions will require the green house structure to be insulated. While those living in warm climates will require shading control, but sometimes you may need both. For example desert regions would need insulation and a shade cover.

Incorporate Air Ventilation With Greenhouse Plans

Step 3:  Be sure to plan for optimum air flow and ventilation, also heating and humidity level controlling. Decide which plants your planning on growing inside the greenhouse and plan according to the plants needs, you won’t go wrong this way. Acquiring good greenhouse ventilation is pretty simple, only requiring a window or a door to open. This is an easy yet very important part of the process, because your plants could suffer greatly if you get this wrong.

Choosing Your Final Greenhouse Location

Step 4:  Make sure that the greenhouse goes into a spot which receives enough sunlight to satisfy all of your plants needs. Aim to give the greenhouse eastern and western exposure, particularly for those who plan on growing vegetables and fruits. What this will do is give ample sunlight to ensure fruiting. If you do not have access to any locations like this it’s fine, it won't hurt anything if you can’t get a ton of sunlight, as long as it gets a decent amount. If you’re a semi experienced gardener you should know about how much sunlight the plant requires.

Choosing Material for Greenhouse Construction

Step 5:  Decide on a siding for your greenhouse. The best material to build greenhouse walls out of is glasses or fiberglass, these can be pricey. These two materials make for a more durable greenhouse, because they won’t break down nearly as fast as plastics. They will also help lock in humidity and maintain higher temperatures within the interior greenhouse. Polycarbonate greenhouse panels are very popular and are found on most brand name of Greenhouses and Easy Grow Greenhouse kits. The polycarbonate paneling is shatter proofed, clear as glass, and virtually impossible to break.

Plan Out Your Greenhouse Foundation

Step 6:  Choose what your foundation is going to be made out of, if your planning on building one. It is not always needed, but it has some nice durability and longevity benefits. You can construct the base out of concrete, makes very stable foundations. Salvaged material is a popular way to go, also inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. Your foundation most likely will modify the greenhouse costs, so its always a great idea to have this in your design plans.

Insulated Heating & Greenhouse Irrigation

Step 7:  If there's room in your budget, adding elements that will make your greenhouse gardening convenient and comfortable is a great idea. Insulated heating and irrigation systems are a can be very essential at times and others they may not be needed, but are always nice to have! Think about getting some extra benches installed, if you have room, so you and your family can just relax and enjoy the greenhouse garden.

Plan For Pest Controlling Your Hobby Greenhouse

Step 8:  Using organic pest controls like bringing in natural predators, which would keep the annoying insects at bay. An example of a natural predator would be a Venus fly trap or something to that effect. Plants with pest infestations should be taken out and away from the other plants, so they may not receive the same damages.

Plan Greenhouse Designs For Maximum Storage Space

Step 9:  Planning the backyard garden greenhouses construction plans to be as spacious as you need is one of the biggest things you can do. Having an extra storage place is very convenient and useful. The majority of people need a place to store their tools, fertilizers and sometimes even lawn mowers. Consider building a tool rack and possibly a bin for keeping soil and fertilizer close to your potting bench, because you most likely will end up using this feature a lot! Miniature greenhouse growing racks are excellent in these types of situations with limited spaces, I strongly recommend that you look at these racks.

Why Should You Follow My 9 Step System?

My nine step program is a compilation of all of the activities involved in greenhouse construction and only the most important and vital steps are included. If you do not believe that these are the most important steps and try to not do the steps, you could end up with some very bad situations.

If you take anything away from this article I hope it would be to make sure that your greenhouses’ materials are safe and family friendly. Remember, greenhouses are fun, but family is much more important! If you do these steps that I recommended you’ll be GROWing crazily before you know it!
